Maazel's Mahler cycle continues. The 9th received a passionate performance, focusing on the weird dissonances and dislocations in I, energy and power in II, the demonic in III, and a beautifully phrased and achingly nostalgic delivery in IV. The Philharmonic's strings have sounded more beautiful, but were quite precise in execution, but the horns, surprisingly, hit a few genuinely bad notes. Maazel brought out the score's modernism, not it's late romanticism. The Saturday night NY Phil audience, always an unruly lot, contributed more extraneous noise to the performance than even their usual, elegantly timing coughs and other loud and violent wheezes to perfection with any rest or pause in the score.
