Neeme Jarvi conducted the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in a spirited and satisfyingly emotional performance of the 2nd Symphony yesterday at the NJ PAC. While I am not ready to proclaim Jarvi a great Mahler conductor, he managed to grasp the spirit of this glorious and grand work, and communicate it to an orchestra that routinely sounds quite good under his direction. There are quibbles, to be sure, as the NJSO is not yet world-class, but, even playing over their heads as they were, they gave a beautiful and stimulating performance.
