Two new additions to my Mahler library are Gustav Mahler and the Courage to Be, by David Holbrook; and Gustav Mahler: The World Listens, Donald Mitchell, ed.

Holbrook's book first appeared in 1975 as an "attempt to apply certain insights from recent psychoanalytical theory and existentialism to the criticism of a work of music." No doubt it is now dated as regards the "insights," but it is an interesting approach. Moreover, Holbrook gives Jack Diether much credit.

The other book is a gigantic publication, issued as a companion to the 1995 Mahler Festival in The Netherlands. The contents are wide-ranging, collected not only from the Festival proceedings but also from much older sources. And it is profusely illustrated.

References to these books seem sparse. Anyone else here familiar with them? If so, what do you think of them?
